History

Japan has a fascinating history that spans thousands of years. It is believed that the first settlements date back to the Jomon period (14,000 B.C.), when hunter-gatherers began to form communities. The Yamato period (250-710 A.D.) consolidated imperial power and brought cultural influences from China and Korea. Between the 12th and 19th centuries, the country was under the control of the shoguns, military leaders who ruled on behalf of the emperor. During the Edo period (1603-1868), Japan experienced a long isolation, but with the Meiji Restoration in 1868, it modernized rapidly. After the devastation of World War II, Japan transformed into a global economic power, known for its technology and culture.
