FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We're Ready to Welcome You on Board

We want to make sailing with Princess Cruises as easy, hassle-free and safe as possible.

Starting Sept. 6, vaccinated guests sailing on voyages of less than 16 days with the exception of Panama Canal transits, trans-ocean and other special itineraries will no longer have to test before boarding and only need to upload proof of vaccination while getting OceanReady®. Unvaccinated guests, or those who do not provide proof of vaccination, on those itineraries will self-test within three days of sailing and upload proof of a negative test on the MedallionClass® app before boarding.

Guests sailing on voyages 16 nights or longer, or sailing on full Panama Canal transits, trans-ocean and other specific itineraries, need to take a supervised test within three days of embarkation (guests 5 and older). Guests on these types of voyages will be contacted directly by an Ocean Navigator to assist.

These new guidelines apply to itineraries from all departure ports except where government regulations and protocols may vary like Canada, Greece and Australia. We continue to work with our global health experts and will responsibly adjust our guidelines going forward as warranted.

All current protocols remain in effect through Sept. 5. Vaccinated guests must have received their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before the beginning of the cruise and provide acceptable proof at terminal check-in. A booster dose is required for guests 18 and older if the last COVID-19 vaccine dose in series is older than 9 months (270 days) from the date of disembarkation. At terminal check-in guests must attest to a negative viral COVID-19 test (PCR or antigen) taken before or at embarkation. We also welcome unvaccinated guests, and specific protocols are outlined below. All documentation can be uploaded into our MedallionClass app to streamline the check-in process in the terminal.

Destinations have their own requirements, so please review the FAQ below, visit the Vaccine and Testing Requirements page, Princess communications and official government sites regarding your voyage.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements

Will shipboard protocols be changing as a result of the CDC’s recent decision to terminate the COVID-19 Program for Cruise Ships Operating in U.S. Waters?

The termination of the COVID-19 Program for Cruise Ships Operating in U.S. Waters is welcome news for Princess and other cruise lines operating in the U.S. and we applaud the CDC’s decision as it places cruising on par with other travel, hospitality and entertainment industry operators.

We will review these updated guidelines but please note there are no immediate changes to our operations. We will keep our guests and travel advisor partners apprised of any updates as information becomes available. In the meantime, please continue to use our website and the booked guest notices received as a guide for upcoming voyages.

I am unvaccinated. Am I still able to sail?

Absolutely. The CDC currently allows cruise lines to carry up to 10% of unvaccinated guests, meaning there are more opportunities for all our guests to sail with us. We manage an exemption process for guests who are not vaccinated regardless of the reason, subject to the regulations of the ports we visit. Exemptions are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Children under 5 years old (who are not yet eligible for COVID-19 vaccines) are not required to apply for an exemption but must still follow all other requirements for unvaccinated guests. Exemptions can be obtained by calling 1-800-PRINCESS.

How will you check that I am fully vaccinated?

Before embarkation, guests eligible for vaccination must state through the MedallionClass® app that they will be fully vaccinated by the time they board.

Original proof of vaccination means a vaccination card that clearly shows the guest’s name, which matches their photo ID, the dates vaccine doses were given (final dose must have been received at least 14 days before the beginning of the cruise), and the name of the facility administering the vaccination. Alternative proof may be required if there are questions and concerns about the submitted proof of vaccination.

Remember to bring this information with you to the terminal to avoid any issues with the boarding process and ensure you’re able to sail with us. The information you provide is subject to our privacy notice on princess.com and shared only as needed with Princess personnel, third parties or local health authorities as part of embarkation-related health protocols.

Am I able to sail with my family?

Yes, we welcome guests of all ages! Please note that children under five years old are permitted to book without requiring an exemption.

Fully vaccinated and up-to-date guests will be required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test along with proof of vaccination when arriving in the terminal and can then proceed on board.

Guests who have been approved for an exemption can still enjoy their favorite Princess experiences. However, they will have to undergo an embarkation day COVID-19 test performed at the terminal, as well as a test prior to debarkation. For guests ages 2 to 4 years old this includes the pre-travel test outlined above, plus an embarkation day COVID-19 test performed at the terminal (on a complimentary basis).

Voyages that begin, end or visit Canada:
Based on current Canadian requirements for cruising, all guests ages 5 and above will require a medically observed negative viral COVID-19 test taken before boarding:

  • Within 2 days for Antigen
  • Within 3 days for PCR

Children aged 2 to 4 are welcome to cruise and an either present proof of vaccination or will need a PCR within 3 days PLUS Antigen at terminal. Kids under 2 years of age have no vaccination or test requirements. Minimum age to sail is 6 months or 12 months based on cruise itinerary, review Passage Contract for details. Note all Alaska voyages include Canadian ports.

What documents do I need to bring with me in order to sail?

It’s important to remember to bring all your documents so that there are no issues at embarkation and you’re able to sail.

If vaccinated bring your proof of COVID-19 vaccination (with the dates of doses received) to the terminal prior to boarding. Guests must have received their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before the beginning of the cruise and provide acceptable proof at terminal check-in. Boosters are highly recommended for those eligible. At terminal check-in guests must provide proof of a negative viral COVID-19 test (PCR or antigen) taken before or at embarkation.

Some countries and regions also have a time limit for when the last dose was given or a booster requirement. The U.S. CDC recommends a booster five months after your mRNA COVID-19 vaccine series; other countries and regions allow for up to nine months. Following the CDC guidance meets the requirements of most of the ports we visit. Vaccination entry requirements can change without notice, so we recommend you keep your vaccination status up to date and become familiar with the requirements for the destinations you plan to visit.

Guests can submit digital or paper records, or QR codes, showing the vaccine type, the date of each vaccine dose administered, the individual’s name and date of birth or other identifier.

You should also complete your health questionnaire using the MedallionClass app within 24 hours before you embark the ship. We’ll confirm your answers when you arrive at the port. The results of any COVID-19 tests and information provided on the health declaration will be subject to the  Princess Cruises Privacy Notice and shared only as needed with Princess personnel, third parties or local health authorities as part of screening and embarkation-related health protocols.

Guests are also required to bring all necessary travel documents, such as passports (with a minimum of six-months validity after your date of return), visas, proof of citizenship, re-entry permits or minor's permissions. Requirements may vary based on nationality, as specified in, which are updated frequently. Other recommended sources for protocols are official websites and apps developed by government agencies and tourism ministries.

Guests must meet the standard pre-cruise COVID-19 testing requirements prior to cruise embarkation. We’re working closely with health authorities to manage updates as policies evolve and will advise booked guests of any changes as they occur.

Voyages that Include Canada:

In addition to your health questionnaire, within 72 hours of embarkation the Canadian government requires all guests (including Canadian residents) to sign into ArriveCAN^ from a computer or download the mobile app to enter your proof of vaccination and travel information. You will receive an ArriveCAN receipt. Please bring a digital copy of the email or print the receipt to bring with you when you travel. If your cruise departs from Canada, you will need an additional ArriveCAN receipt separate from your land/air arrival receipt.

Where can I get a viral COVID-19 test near me?

Contact your nearest health center^, pharmacy (including CVS^ and Walgreens^), state health department^, or the airport you’re flying from to learn more about their availability for COVID-19 testing.

For U.S. -based vaccinated guests, Princess also recommends a couple of options for FDA-authorized, medically supervised at-home antigen test kits.

Optum offers an at-home antigen test kit ($69.99 for two), which can be ordered and shipped to your door in three business days or less. These at-home tests include a virtual, video-supervised visit with an eMed Certified Guide through telehealth services. These guides will help you properly administer the test and verify the results within 15 minutes. The lab result report is delivered via email and can be printed or displayed on your mobile device during check-in. Place your order about two weeks before boarding. Order your Optum test kit online^.

Radeas offers an at-home antigen test kit ($45 each), which can be ordered and shipped to your door for free in five-to-seven business days. The kit includes a telemedicine consultation. Orders can be shipped within one month of your cruise date. Order your Radeas test kit online^.

We understand it may be difficult to obtain a pre-cruise testing appointment. For fully vaccinated guests only, we’re able to provide a limited number of antigen tests through a third-party partner at a cost of $60. Reservations are required^, and appointments may be made up to 10 days in advance, subject to capacity restrictions. Testing takes place on embarkation day at or near the cruise terminal. *This COVID-19 program is available to eligible individuals for $0 out of pocket when billed to a health plan or the government.

For U.K.-based guests, Princess recommends an option for an FDA-authorized, medically supervised at-home antigen test kit through our testing partner Prenetics™ (£30 each). Order your lateral flow antigen test kit online^.

Are self-tests acceptable?

Of course. Vaccinated guests may use a medically observed self-test (sometimes referred to as an at-home test) that meets the following criteria:

  • The test must be a SARS-CoV-2 viral test (nucleic acid amplification test [NAAT] or antigen test) with Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Please note: antigen tests are accepted for fully vaccinated guests but not for unvaccinated guests.
  • The testing procedure must include a telehealth service affiliated with the manufacturer of the test that provides real-time supervision remotely through an audio and video connection. Some FDA-authorized self-tests that include a telehealth service may require a prescription.
  • The telehealth provider must confirm the person’s identity, observe the specimen collection and testing procedures, confirm the test result and issue a report that meets the requirements of acceptable proof of a negative COVID-19 test.

Princess has partnered with Optum and Radeas so that U.S.-based vaccinated guests can order an FDA-authorized at-home antigen test kit, shipped to home. These at-home tests include a telehealth service. Please place your order with enough time to receive the test before boarding. Order your Optum test kit^ or Radeas test kit online^.

What is acceptable proof of a negative COVID-19 test result?

The following formats are acceptable proof of a negative COVID-19 test: paper COVID-19 test results (original only, no photocopies accepted), digital or emailed COVID-19 test results or record of COVID-19 testing from a healthcare provider including original digital email notification or personal electronic health record.

The negative COVID-19 test result must include:

  • Where the test was administered, including name and contact information for the laboratory or healthcare personnel who performed the test
  • Type of test (indicating it is a NAAT or antigen test)
  • A specimen collection date within the necessary time frame before cruise departure
  • Guest’s name and either date of birth, age or passport number
  • A negative test result using words or phrases including:
    • Negative
    • Undetectable
    • SARS-CoV-2 RNA not detected
    • SARS-CoV-2 antigen not detected
    • COVID-19 not detected
    • Not reactive

Test results marked “invalid” are not accepted.

Will you offer COVID-19 testing near the terminal before my cruise?

We strongly recommend all guests take a viral COVID-19 test (PCR or antigen) before leaving home to avoid queues and travel disruptions associated with a possible positive test result on the day of embarkation.

We understand that it may be difficult for some of our guests to find testing that can provide results within a two-day period. For voyages departing from the U.S. and Canada, we are providing a limited number of antigen tests for fully vaccinated guests through an outside partner, DocGo. Reservations are required and appointments may be made up to 10 days in advance, subject to capacity restrictions. Testing will take place on embarkation day at the cruise terminal. The cost of each test is $60, which is charged directly by DocGo. Visit the DocGo website for more information^.

For fully vaccinated guests who can show proof of testing within the two-day window but did not receive their test results back in time, Princess will provide complimentary testing at or near the terminal on the day of your cruise departure.

Following CDC guidelines, guests who test positive for COVID-19 on embarkation day will not be able to sail and neither will their family members and close contacts. They may be required to quarantine shoreside and restricted from commercial air travel. If you, your family members, travel companions or other close contacts are suspected of having COVID-19 and are denied boarding, you will be entitled to a 100% Future Cruise Credit (FCC).

What are the testing requirements for cruisetours?

We have implemented a new requirement for southbound (land-first) cruisetours:

Guests 2 years of age and older must now produce a medically observed negative viral COVID-19 test result at the start of their pre-cruise land tour. The test must be medically observed and can be an antigen test taken within two days – or a PCR test taken within three days – of the start of your tour. At-home medically observed antigen tests, such as from Optum^ are allowed.

We’ll provide a COVID-19 test before embarkation of the cruise portion of the cruisetour on a complimentary basis. Guests who end their cruise in Vancouver, B.C., and fly back into the U.S. should review requirements for returning to the U.S. via air. Guests who purchase our motorcoach transportation Vancouver to Seattle are not required to have a negative test to reenter the U.S.

There is no change in requirements for northbound (cruise-first) cruisetours.

^You are now leaving princess.com and going to a third-party website that is not owned, operated or controlled by Princess or any of its affiliates.

What if I test positive for COVID-19 in my pre-travel or embarkation day COVID-19 test, prior to boarding the ship?

Guests who test positive for COVID-19, as well as their family members and close contacts, will not be allowed to sail and should not travel to the ship. If you, your family members, travelling companions or other close contacts are suspected of having COVID-19 and are not permitted to board, you are entitled to a 100% Future Cruise Credit (FCC).

If you are denied boarding at the pier because you tested positive for COVID-19 on embarkation day, change fees and reasonable expenses related shoreside quarantine and travel home for you and your immediate travel party will be covered by Princess if not reimbursable from medical insurance, a travel protection plan or other responsible party. Any meals during shoreside quarantine will be covered by a per-diem meal allowance as communicated by a letter provided by staff at the pier. (No receipt retention is required.)

If you have purchased a travel protection plan through us, you and your travel companion may make a claim for a refund under the trip interruption benefit instead of receiving the Future Cruise Credit.

What if I had COVID-19 before my vacation and recently recovered? Will I be able to sail?

Guests who have recovered from COVID-19 within three months from the date of their cruise departure or cruisetour departure (whichever starts first) do not need to take a viral test before embarkation if they are at least 10 days past their COVID-19 infection, have no symptoms and produce documentation of recovery from COVID-19.

Documentation of recovery consists of the following:

  • Paper or electronic copies of the positive viral test result from a certified laboratory (dated no more than 90 days ago) or
  • A valid digital COVID-19 certificate (DCC) or a document issued by an official health or government authority showing confirmed previous infection

Guests who present these documents will need to go through a secondary screening at the terminal, and boarding will be approved at the medical staff’s discretion. Guests who are unable to provide documentation of recovery that fulfills the above requirements must take the required COVID-19 viral test and show a negative result.

What if I don't get my test results back in time?

All guests must produce a negative viral COVID-19 test taken before embarkation on all Princess sailings.

We understand that it may be difficult for some of our guests to find testing that can provide results within a tight turnaround. Accordingly, for fully vaccinated guests who can show proof of testing within the two-day window but did not receive their test results back in time, Princess will provide complimentary testing at or near the terminal on the day of your cruise departure.

Before You Sail

Are crew members vaccinated?

Yes, our crew members are vaccinated and received a booster dose in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Do I need travel insurance?

Given the current global travel and health environment, we encourage all booked guests to purchase travel insurance before departure. For eligible guests, Princess Vacation Protection provides a broad range of benefits, including reimbursement for COVID-19-related expenses, subject to the plan terms. Guests can also purchase third-party travel insurance as well and should check with the provider for specific details on their coverage terms and policies.

Will I be able to book multiple cruises, back to back?

Yes, we will offer back-to-back bookings, subject to availability. Guests ages 5 and above on such sailings will need to take a complimentary rapid antigen test within two days of the second cruise if the that sailing includes a trans-ocean voyage or full Panama Canal transit and the itinerary is 10 days or more.

Guests who test positive for COVID-19 will not be able to sail on the next voyage, nor will their family members and close contacts who are not fully vaccinated. If you, your family members, travel companions or other close contacts are suspected of having COVID-19, you are entitled to a 100% Future Cruise Credit (FCC).

We will closely monitor guidance from government and health authorities and will adapt and evolve this policy accordingly.

If I require oxygen and/or dialysis during my cruise, may I still travel?

We welcome guests who use oxygen concentrators and those who are undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Unfortunately, we are unable to host guests who are dependent on supplemental oxygen tanks or are undergoing hemodialysis at this time. Our medical experts have determined that, for the guest’s own safety, this is the right decision. We remain optimistic that our approach on future sailings will become more flexible.

Please know that we’ve had to make some difficult decisions based on general public health guidelines and the overall health and safety of our guests. We did not take any of them lightly.

Embarkation

If I am denied boarding at the terminal for failure to produce proof of vaccine, will you reimburse my out-of-pocket expenses to that point and the cost of my travel home?

There will be a Princess representative on-site at the terminal to support any guests who are not able to sail because of COVID-19-related issues. However, if you fail to produce proof of being fully vaccinated at time of embarkation (which means the final dose must have been received at least 14 days before the beginning of the cruise) you will not be able to sail, and any associated costs incurred will be at your own expense.

If I forget my proof of vaccination on embarkation day, can I meet the ship at its next port and board there?

Guests who are denied boarding at the embarkation port for lack of vaccination proof may be able to join the ship at another port on the itinerary, subject to the agreement of the port. Guests must meet the same proof of full vaccination as required of them on embarkation day. Any associated costs incurred for meeting up with the ship will be at the guest’s own expense.

Onboard Experience

Has the guest experience changed?

Guests still enjoy everything they love about Princess – VIP service for all, made-from-scratch cuisine, Broadway-style shows, the relaxing Lotus Spa® and fast-paced casino action – all at an unparalleled value – with enhanced onboard protocols that help promote a safe and healthy environment.

We may limit capacity in some venues, and we regularly sanitize high-touch surfaces at an even higher level than before. Our youth and teen programs also operate with enhanced protocols. Stateroom stewards will ask guests at the beginning of the cruise their preferences regarding cleaning frequency: twice a day, skip turndown cleaning or opt not to have any cleaning service during their cruise. Guests can always request cleaning service using the portal outside of the stateroom or through OceanNow® ordering in the MedallionClass app.

We have consulted with leading medical experts to create an extensive response plan for managing COVID-19 cases on our ships. We have also made arrangements with local port, health and transportation authorities to support our vessels should it become necessary.

In addition to the onboard Medical Center, the shoreside Health Operations Center is staffed 24/7 by our team of dedicated medical and public health professionals.

Will I have to wear a face mask?

Masks are recommended, but not required, in the majority of onboard venues, though you may need to wear them in select venues or certain situations. Please note that until further notice masks are required in all indoor locations on northbound and southbound Alaska voyages between Whittier and Vancouver, B.C., in an abundance of caution.

You won’t have to guess. Mask requirements are clearly designated through signage and onboard communications.

We recommend guests wash or replace their mask daily and choose a good quality mask. Masks should have two or more layers, completely cover the nose and mouth, fit snuggly against the sides of the face and have a nose wire. We follow the CDC guidelines that recommend wearing a high-quality N95 or KN95 mask.

Please note that visors and face shields will not be accepted as a substitute for a face mask. We’ll provide complimentary surgical masks on board with replacements available upon request.

Additionally, when going ashore, guests should be prepared to follow all local health guidelines, the status of which will be shared before debarkation at the destination.

What requirements are in place for guests who have been approved for a vaccination exemption?

In accordance with health authority directives, all unvaccinated guests must follow these COVID-19 protocols:

  • Show proof of a negative pre-travel COVID-19 RT-PCR test performed within three days prior to sailing.
  • Undergo an embarkation day COVID-19 test at the terminal, as we must provide testing information and reporting to the destinations we visit. Guests will be responsible for the cost of testing and administration in most destinations. Each test is offered at our internal cost, and the number of tests required will vary by length of voyage and local requirements.

Health & Safety

What happens if I have COVID-19 on board?

Anyone reporting or exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will be reviewed by the shipboard medical staff and tested. COVID-19 cases will be assessed and treated either in their stateroom or in a designated area of the Medical Center in a single occupancy ward.

Positive cases that do not require admission to the ship’s medical center, or medical disembarkation, will most likely be moved to a different stateroom for the duration of isolation.

If you, your family members, travel companions or other close contacts are quarantined or medically isolated during your voyage as a result of a positive COVID-19 test during your cruise or are suspected of having COVID-19, you are entitled to a 100% Future Cruise Credit for missed cruise days, including time in quarantine, for you, your travel party and any confirmed close contacts.

If you have purchased a travel protection plan through us, you and your travel companion may make a claim for a refund under the trip interruption benefit instead of receiving the FCC.

Will testing for COVID-19 be available on board?

Yes, all ships have COVID-19 viral testing capabilities, including SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR, RT LAMP and antigen tests. Protocols for testing for SARS-CoV-2 are based on expert recommendations, including CDC testing guidance. Onboard COVID-19-related medical center care for positive or suspected COVID-19 cases is free of charge.

Does the Medical Center have special enhancements to manage COVID-19 on board?

All Princess ships have a dedicated medical staff of doctors and nurses operating ship medical centers to serve guests and crew on board. They are up to date on the latest COVID-19 scientific protocols and trained on all relevant COVID-19 procedures. We’ve also expanded onboard medical roles to include staff responsible for overseeing public health issues, including outbreak prevention and response.

We’ve enhanced our shipboard medical capabilities with the necessary staffing, medications, supplies, oxygen, equipment and procedures to triage and treat multiple COVID-19 cases across the full clinical spectrum including intensive care.

The medical staff requirements and equipment on each ship meet or exceed the guidelines from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Healthcare Guidelines for Cruise Ship Medical Facilities.

How have you improved the onboard HVAC system?

Where possible, we’ve increased outside air to the maximum practical level for each HVAC unit. HVAC units have been upgraded with F7 (MERV 13) filters, and some units also have the latest generation ultraviolet light (UVC/UVGI) treatment systems to facilitate high quality recirculated air where possible within design limitations.

The Medical Center has HEPA filtration and is maintained under negative pressure, which means the ventilation system removes more air than it allows into the room.

Shore Visits & Excursions

What healthy and safety measures are in place on shore excursions?

The ability for guests to go ashore in ports of call is controlled by the governments of the ports we visit, based on their specific protocols and requirements. When going ashore, guests should be prepared to follow all local health guidelines, the status of which will be shared before debarkation at the destination.

All guests, including those who are not vaccinated, are welcome to go ashore either by purchasing an excursion through Princess or touring independently.

Masks are recommended, but not required, while on shore excursions unless mandated by local authorities.

Tour guides, escorts and transport staff are expected to maintain and monitor physical distancing. Staff is trained in these health precautions and will monitor those on excursions for symptoms of COVID-19, taking appropriate action as necessary. All vehicles adhere to cruise line and/or local government capacity limitations, whichever is stricter. Venues will be cleaned and disinfected according to COVID-19 protocols before guest arrival as well as in between groups, with attention to hand contact and high-traffic areas. All equipment, such as gloves, safety helmets and life jackets, are fully sanitized before each use.

When going ashore always carry your Medallion(R) device and proof of identification.

Additionally, please note that these measures are subject to change at any time. Therefore, we highly recommend you book

Post-Cruise

Do I need a negative test to return to the U.S.?

On June 12, 2022, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lifted the negative COVID-19 testing requirement for travelers returning to the U.S. We encourage guests to review their home country’s health authority and travel websites for the latest guidance on testing and timing for return travel.

Can I book a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay in my embarkation or debarkation city?

Yes, you may book lodging at your own discretion, following local guidelines. Guests must fulfill all requirements for post-cruise testing by the destination.

Check the destination’s official government website to understand what documents and tests may be required for a post-cruise extended stay.
